Rafa Canizares Winemaker
Rafa Cañizares is one of the most reputable winegrowers and winemakers, one of the protagonists of the boom in high quality Spanish wines.
He is a winegrower by family tradition, and lives by and for wine, his true passion. Trained in oenology, his whole life is forged around none other than the vineyard and the world of wine.
Rafa Cañizares is an enterprising and visionary person, a tireless worker, who never ceases in his efforts to achieve unique wines that express the personality of the terroir and the different varietals. Although he works in different wine regions, his greatest achievements and recognition have been achieved with wines from the Alicante DO.
Among other merits, it has managed to place a wine from Alicante in the Top 10 Values of 2023 list of the famous American magazine Wine Spectator, being the only Spanish wine on the list.
Thanks to the practice of a sustainable and exceptional viticulture, an exhaustive work in the field and a winemaking process that always starts with the best fruit of the land and in which every detail is taken care of, it has managed to become one of the benchmarks of Spanish wine.
The pillars of the winery are based on the repositioning of quality Spanish wines, recovering old vineyards of native varieties, which either due to low yields or lack of generational replacement would have been lost if no one had believed in them.
Rafa not only revitalizes these vineyards and contributes to the maintenance of
a beautiful landscape, but also manages to produce exceptional wines
with its own seal, showing the true value of the terroir and native varieties.
Although he has worked in other areas of Spain, he believes in the province of Alicante like no other, achieving the maximum expression of the Monastrell variety in the winery’s most renowned wines.
5 GENERATIONS dedicated to wine
Rafael Cañizares was born in a corner of Castilla-La Mancha, a land of vast vineyards and a deep-rooted winemaking tradition. And he does it in the middle of the grape harvest. It seemed that it was not a good time for it, but perhaps the aroma he breathed as a child already gave him all the winemaking strength he has today to carry wine in his veins and in his head. His great-grandfather was also a winegrower, like his grandfather and father. Today, his daughter Sofía is already the fifth generation. After his enormous success in Bodegas Volver, now, with Bodegas y Viñedos Rafa Cañizares, he presents a project that encompasses not only a winery, but a philosophy of life rooted in the culture, tradition and passion of wine, complemented by a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation.

SOFÍA CAÑIZARES
Sofía and Adrián Cañizares, Rafa’s children, also carry in their DNA the passion for the world of wine and since they were very young they have helped their father in various tasks, although they have also been trained outside the home and have worked in different companies. Adrián is in charge of the Marketing and Communication Department while Sofía has studied oenology and works in the vineyard
and in winemaking at the winery. With them, the participation of the 5th generation of winemakers in the management of the new winery is assured.
Rafa is particularly enthusiastic about Sofia’s work, as it is more similar to his own, to whom he transmits all his experience and know-how, although he constantly encourages her to make her own wines, giving them her own personality and style.

Adrián carries out the winery’s communication and marketing tasks, making the strength and good work of the family of winegrowers known to the general public.
